SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE - DIVISION 5
Judge Matt Sheehan has dedicated his legal career to serving the people of Vigo County with fairness, integrity, and a commitment to the rule of law. A graduate of Indiana State University and the Indiana University School of Law, Matt pursued a career in public service and law, building a reputation as a thoughtful and experienced attorney before entering the judiciary.

Since 2018, Judge Sheehan has had the honor of serving the community as a judicial officer. He was initially appointed by Governor Eric Holcomb to serve as Judge of the Terre Haute City Court. During his tenure, he was recognized as the 2020 Public Official of the Year by the Wabash Valley Recovery Alliance for his commitment to helping individuals struggling with mental health and substance use disorders. Through strategic partnerships with the Hamilton Center and other local treatment providers, he helped significantly expand the Psychiatric Assertive Identification and Referral (PAIR) program.

Judge Sheehan subsequently served as Judge of the Terre Haute City Court before being elected to preside over Vigo County Superior Court, Division 5 in 2020. In this role, he oversees major felony, misdemeanor, and civil cases. Over the past five years, he has presided over numerous jury trials and has disposed of more than 10,000 cases. He is known for bringing a balanced approach to the bench while ensuring that every person who enters the courtroom is treated with dignity and respect.

Throughout his judicial career, Judge Sheehan has focused on improving the efficiency of the court system, protecting public safety, and upholding the constitutional rights of all citizens. His experience handling complex cases, managing court operations, and working collaboratively with law enforcement, attorneys, and community stakeholders has prepared him to address the challenges facing Vigo County today.

Judge Sheehan also serves on the Court Alcohol and Drug Program Advisory Committee (CADPAC), which provides recommendations to the Indiana Judicial Conference Board of Directors and assists the Indiana Office of Court Services in the administration of Court Alcohol and Drug Programs throughout Indiana.
Prior to taking the bench, Judge Sheehan served as a public defender, deputy prosecuting attorney, and trial attorney in private practice, giving him extensive experience on all sides of the courtroom.

A lifelong resident of Vigo County, Judge Sheehan is a graduate of Terre Haute North High School, Indiana State University, and the Indiana University School of Law. He remains deeply committed to public service and to ensuring that the justice system serves the community fairly, efficiently, and transparently. He believes that strong courts, accountable leadership, and equal justice under the law are essential to maintaining public trust and strengthening the community for future generations.

Above all, Judge Sheehan is a proud father of four children, including triplets.
